The sword is a nearly universal symbol of a warrior's offensive strength. Ranging in size and design from a greatsword, meant to slash through armor, flesh, and bone, to a rapier, meant to pierce through the gaps in an opponents armor. The blades and hilts have generally been constructed of metals ranging from bronze to steel, with the handles being made of wood or bone, but wholly wooden swords, sometimes called wasters, were often used for practice. Most modern swords are decorative or ceremonial (the weapon itself having been superceded by more advanced armaments), but the sword itself is so pervasive through human culture, that it has come to symbolize, or be associated with, many things (honor, brutality, both military power and prowess, and even some components of the human anatomy).
A broken sword could mean many things, but for the warrior himself, it often meant death. A fortunate warrior may have been able to put its remnants to sufficient use until he could find another within reach on the battlefield, but, for most, that opportunity would have been too distant or unlikely for survival to be assured.
