FOCA - SEAL

There are 32 species of seals. The largest is the southern elephant seal, which can weigh more than 2 tons (4,000 pounds) and the smallest is the Galapagos fur seal, which weighs, in comparison, a mere 65pounds.

The last Spanish Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) "Peluso" dissapeared from the Chafarinas Islands, mar de Alborán (35º 11' N 2º 26') in 1994 after life and death agony with his neck tangled to cords and drift plastic rings.

The two main remaining populations of Mediterranean 600approx. monk seals live in critical danger of extinction in the northeastern Mediterranean and in the northeast Atlantic off the northwestern coast of Africa.
