Current Goal

Since the real Ivan was held in solitary confinement for 27 years of his life, our class decided that they would like our Ivan to be free!  That means our Ivan should not be locked up in a geocache for a long time.  Forests...Open fields.....Meadows.....Etc.....Places where sunlight, trees, grass and fresh air dominate the surroundings.  Bring him to a place where ALL of his senses would be fully activated.
The real Ivan was also an artist (see pics).  Our Ivan would love to visit anything artistic or artsy.  An art gallery.....A mural....A sculpture....A painting....Etc.....Anywhere where he would be in awe.  Anywhere where he could sit, relax, and imagine.
After 27 years of being "locked up", the real Ivan finally had the chance to move to a place where there were other gorillas. Ivan spent 17 years at Zoo Atlanta.  At the zoo, Ivan was able to experience things that he hadn't experienced in over 30 years:  other gorillas....grass....flowers....sunlight....fresh air....trees....If our Ivan could visit Zoo Atlanta (or any Zoo with gorillas) and be with others of his kind, that would make us and HIM.....EXTREMELY HAPPY!!!
The real Ivan was taken from the wild as a juvenile from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1962.  Our ULTIMATE goal for our Ivan would be to get him HOME.  If someone could take our Ivan to a place in the Congo where Lowland Gorillas roam free, that would be simply AMAZING!  Once there, our Ivan would not want to come back.  We would like to see him stay there....wild and free.

THANK YOU so very much for helping us, and Ivan, achieve our goals!

TAKING PICTURES OF OUR IVAN ALONG HIS ADVENTURE WOULD BE AN ADDED BONUS...IT WOULD BE AWESOME TO BE ABLE TO SEE HIS JOURNEY!

About This Item

Our IVAN

Our 5th grade class at Kinry Road Elementary School recently just finished the book, "THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN" by Katherine Applegate.  My student's and I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it has unexpectedly made a deep impact on the way we think about animals that are held in captivity.  From the official website:

"Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.
Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.
Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it's up to Ivan to make it a change for the better."

THE REAL IVAN.  From the official website:

"The One and Only Ivan is a work of fiction, but the inspiration for this imagined tale lies with a true story.
Ivan, a real gorilla, lived at Zoo Atlanta, but on the way to that happy ending, he spent almost three decades without seeing another of his own kind before being moved to Zoo Atlanta in 1994.
After being captured as in infant in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ivan’s female companion, reported to have been his twin, died en route to the US or shortly thereafter), Ivan was raised in a home until he became unmanageable. At that point he was added to an odd collection of animals housed at a circus-themed mall in Washington state.
Ivan spent twenty-seven years of his life alone in a cage. Over time, as an understanding of primate needs and behavior grew, public discomfort with Ivan's lonely state grew as well, particularly after he was featured in a National Geographic special entitled "The Urban Gorilla." A public outcry followed, including heartfelt letters from children. When the mall where Ivan lived went bankrupt, he was placed on permanent loan to Zoo Atlanta, which houses the largest group of captive western lowland gorillas in the nation.
Ivan became a beloved celebrity at Zoo Atlanta, where he lived contentedly with other gorillas, although he never sired any offspring. He was known for his paintings, which were often "signed" with his thumbprint. Ivan died on August 20, 2012 at the age of 50."
