I would like to have Busy Beaver visit as many marshes, lakes, river, and streams as possible. Ultimately, I'd like to have his photo taken with a beaver lodge or dam in the background! Photos of Busy Beaver by tree stumps chewed down by his friends are welcome too!
The (Canadian) beaver is the largest rodent in North America. Its latin name is castor canadensis.
It weighs any where from 11-32 kg with an average weight of 20 kg. Older individuals tend to gain weight as they age.
Beavers secrete an oil called castoreteum from the scent glands which they use to coat their fur to make them waterproof.
The highly recognizable feature of a flat, scaly tail acts as a fin when swimming. When beavers sense danger, they slap their tail on the water as a warning to others.
Beaver lodges are easily recognizable and are built of twigs, branches, rocks, and mud. They use the same materials to build dams.
The beaver is well known as being Canada's national symbol. In fact, it was featured on Canada's first postage stamp, the "Three Penny Beaver" in 1851!
The beaver become Canada's official emblem on March 24th, 1975.
