Current Goal

          Jaws the shark is one of the eight travel bugs set free by Mrs. Lester’s kids, a group of fabulous group of fifth graders from Columbus, Georgia. His mission is to visit San Francisco, California. Our research team plans to follow Jaws the shark, taking notes about where he goes and what he sees along the way. Please take many pictures and share stories with us as you enjoy time with Jaws.

          Jaws will find San Francisco, California to be a very interesting city with many landmarks, bays, and cool transportation systems. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of these famous landmarks. It was built in the 1930s. It was designed by Joseph Strauss. The Bridge was built to make traveling across the bay easier, and it was finally completed in 1937. Jaws especially wants to see the Golden Gate Park on the bridge while he goes over the San Francisco Bay. After he departs off the bridge, he wants to visit the Golden Gate Park.

          In the Golden Gate Park he would like to see the traditional gardens which are the Japanese Tea, Rose, and Botanical Gardens. Jaws may also like to eat fortune cookies in a Japanese restaurant. He may find this traditional garden around February which is the time the flowers bloom. The park has thirteen million visitors a year and Jaws wants to be one of them.

          One of Jaws' favorite activities to do when he goes places is to visit famous landmarks. Pier 39 is the perfect places to take him. He will enjoy riding the two story castle hand crafted in Italy. He might also like to watch sea lions that migrate to California in the summer.  Another thing he might like to do is watch boats going up and down the bay. He might also like visiting Alcatraz Island in the bay. He will also like looking around the old jailhouse. The prison was closed due to security problems and high costs. This is some places where Jaws would love to go.

          Jaws likes to visit historical sites. Please take Jaws to the place where the California Gold Rush started. It began when James Marshall found some gold by Sutter’s Mill in a place called Coloma, California. It was January 24, 1848. The first people to come were the people of Oregon, Latin America, and the Sandwich Islands in Hawaii. When everybody was told, about 300,000 people came to California to mine for gold. San Francisco at first had a population of about 200 people before the gold rush, but then suddenly, it became a boomtown with a population of about 36,000.

          Jaws loves to ride cable cars. The cable car was invented by Andrew Halide. He invented it when he saw a horse-streetcar accident. So he and his partners tried to fix the problem. Then he invented the cable car. It would be great if Jaws could travel around San Francisco in a cable car.

          If Jaws just wants to have some fun, take him to Sea World. Sea world was built on March 21, 1964. It was built because a man named Milton Shedd wanted to build an ocean themed restaurant with an underwater view. Also while you are at sea world take him to the flying stingray show and Jaws will be hungry too. So take him to the restaurant Fish Food Fry. Afterwards,  take him to swim with the dolphins. Then make sure he gets to see his fellow shark friends.
