The salmon prefers to travel in caches near water - it likes both fresh water and sea water. When I released it in September 2014 in Ireland, we thought it would be great if the salmon could visit Alaska at some point. But don't hesitate to move it around elsewhere in the world if you haven't got any immediate plans for Alaska.
With this coin I want to spread a real good- news story. We live near the German / Swiss / French border, and in 2012 a new hydroelectric power station was built on the Rhine near us (in Rheinfelden). It included a modern fish bypass. Soon after, a salmon was discovered there. It was the first time since the 1950s that a salmon had made it all the way from the North Sea to Switzerland. Obviously, the local fish experts were not used to seeing salmon, so they took a DNA sample which confirmed it was the real thing. I think it's amazing, and a sign that all the measure to clean up our rivers seem to be working.
