About This Item

Front

Anubis was the Egyptian mythology the son of Osiris and Nephthys. He is usually depicted with schakalhuvud and human, but sometimes quite a jackal, and is found in many Egyptian tombs.

Anubis was a god originally from Abydos in Upper Egypt who protected the dead graves. From the fifth dynasty he also counted as a son of the sun god Ra. He accompanied the deceased to Osiris court in the Underworld where he invested their hearts in one scale of a balance scale and a feather from justice goddess Ma'at on the other.Where the heart heavier than the spring devoured it by the crocodile-headed monster Ammat. Where the heart light as spring got the dead enter the afterlife.

Anubis was also embalming art's special god.Anubis has many titles attached to his funeral role, as "he who is on his mountain," which underscores his importance as they are killed and their tombs protectors, and the title of "he who is in the embalming place" which associates him with mummification. Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumes many different roles in different contexts.
