This is the Merchant Marines 2011 Geocoin. The Merchant Marines have been around since the 15th Century and have assisted in wartime since 1775. However, until 1988 when President Regan signed a bill granting them veteran status, the Merchant Marines were considered only civilians with no veteran military benefits. Since the Merchant Marine aids in our National Defense, they should be considered veterans and have their military benefits.
The front of the coin has an anchor on a red, white and blue shield. The back of the coin has the Merchant Marine Military Sealift Command with the Eagle in the center of it, along with a Liberty Ship. Imprinted on the back is their motto, "Deeds Not Words" in both Latin and English. A very beautiful coin.
