Cierpienia moje i męki serdeczne,
I ciągłą walkę z szatanów gromadą,
Ich bronie jasne i tarcze słoneczne,
Jamy wężową napełnione zdradą...
Powiem... wyroki wypełniając wieczne,
Które to na mnie dzisiaj brzemię kładą,
Abym wyśpiewał rzeczy przeminięte
I wielkie duchów świętych wojny święte.
-
Ja, Her Armeńczyk, leżałem na stosie
Trupem... przy niebios jasnej błyskawicy.
Kaukaz w piorunów się ciągłym rozgłosie
Odzywał do ech ciemnej okolicy;
Niebo sczerniało... ale świeciło się
Grzmotami... jak wid szatańskiej stolicy...
A ja, świecący od ciągłego grzmota,
Leżałem. – Zbroja była na mnie złota.
-
I duch nie wyszły z umarłego ciała
Czuł jakąś dumę, że spokojnie leży;
A nad nim ziemia poruszona grzmiała
I unosiły się duchy rycerzy.
– Trójca widm mój stos ogniem zapalała,
A ja czekałem, aż piorun uderzy:
Tak byłem pewny, że w owe rumiane
Grzmotem powietrze – jak duch zmartwychwstanę.
-
Już przybliżały straszne czarownice
Chwast zapalony i suche piołuny,
I moje blade oświeciwszy lice,
Wrzeszcząc, posępne swe śpiewały runy:
Kiedy je trzasły aż trzy błyskawice
I trzy siarczane, ogniste pioruny,
I tak strzaskały płomienie czerwone,
Żem je nie martwe sądził, lecz zniknione.
-
Wtenczas to dusza wystąpiła ze mnie,
I o swe ciało już nie utroskana,
Ale za ciałem płacząca daremnie,
Cała poddana pod wyroki Pana,
W Styksie, w letejskiej wodzie albo w Niemnie
Gotowa tracić rzeczy ludzkich miana,
Poszła: – a wiedzą tylko wniebowzięci,
Czym jest moc czucia a strata pamięci!

-
My sufferings and pains of my heart,
Endless fight against hellish hordes,
Glowing weapons and sunbright shields,
Pits full of snake treason...
I'll tell about it all, it's my eternal doom,
It is my burden for the present day,
To sing about things long gone
And about holy wars of holy spirits.
-
I, Her Armenian, was lying dead on a pyre.
The sky was enlightened by lightnings.
Caucasus was talking with dark plains
With echoes of loud thunders;
The sky was black but flashed
With bolts... Like a vision of a satanic city.
And I was laying and glowing,
Lightnings reflected in my golden armor..
-
And my spirit still in my dead body
Was proud that he lays peacefully.
And the earth was rumbling
And spirits of my knights were above me.
Three witches came to light my pyre,
But I was waiting for a thunder.
For I was sure that I would resurrect
And fly into the lightning-bright air.
-
The wicked hags were near
with their torches of wormwood.
The glow illuminated my pale face,
And they were shrieking their spells:
But then three lightnings crushed them
And a triple thunder roared
And they bursted into flames,
And disappeared in ashes.
-
That very time my soul went out from me,
Not taking care of the dead body at all,
But missing the body all the time,
And ready for the Lord's judhement.
My soul was ready to drink water of forgetfullness
From Styx, or Lethe or Niemen.
And only those taken to Heaven know,
What is: to lose memory but to retain feelings.
