About This Item

Fonnås-spenna

This geocoin is a replica of the Fonnås brooche that was found on Fonnås farm, in Rendalen, Hedmark, Norway.

The original Fonnås brooch dating back to approx. 500 AD. is a gilded relief brooch in silver, from the Migration Period. Weight 215 grams. Length 17.5 cm. It was found in the soil on the farm in 1877 by clearing new land. The brooch was found in approx. 1 meter depth and nothing at the finding conditions could prove a grave or that the brooch had been placed on purpose.

The brooch currently belongs to the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo.

The brooch is known for its special runic inscription carved on the back of the square head, with a needle or similar pointed tool. The inscription consists of four lines, where one is engraved from left to right, and the rest from right to left.

Sophus Bugge reads the inscription like this:

nglsklR
wkshu
ingRsAngsrbse
a
ihspidultl

which he translates into:

Angelskalk Vakrs huskarl fra Ingesarv eier den gode spænde.

- We think the english translation would be:

Angelskalk Vakrs housecarl from Ingesarv owns this good brooch.

(In medieval Scandinavia housecarls were either non-servile manservants, or household troops in personal service of someone, equivalent to a bodyguard to Scandinavian lords and kings.)
