Diogo de Silves (Diogo from Silves) was a Portuguese Sailor that discovered the Santa Maria Island and probably the São Miguel Island in the Azores in the year 1427 when he was returning from a trip to the Madeira Island. About the identity of this character little is known. At that time, last names were normally the place where people were born, so, we supose that he would have been born in this town in Algarve (South of Portugal), what makes sense since most of the Portuguese ships of the discoveries set sail from Sagres in the Algarve and most of the sailors were also from the Algarve.
Naming this coin after Diogo de Silves is also an hommage to my homeland since i was born in Portimão wich is just 17 kms from Silves and my parents are also from Silves.
