About This Item

Wasabi, the Green Sea Turtle TB

We met Wasabi in 2010 while she was part of the I&J Predator Exhibit at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, South Africa.

She is a green sea turtle and was found stranded on Muizenberg beach, near Cape Town in December 2006.  She was weak and dehydrated with an injured right flipper, and a very long way from her home in the warm Indian Ocean.  Upon arrival at the aquarium, she weighed a mere 392g with a carapace measuring 18.3cm long and 19.1cm wide.  Aquarium staff nursed her back to health and she was first displayed in the Oceans of Contrast: Indian Ocean Gallery before moving to the I&J Predator Exhibit in 2008.

By April 2010 she weighed in at 36kg with a carapace length of 65cm and width of 54cm, however, aquarium staff started noting that Wasabi was using her right flipper less and less, particularly when the temperature in the exhibit dropped.  She was diagnosed with chronic arthritis, probably due to the old injury to the flipper.  This was made worse by the cold waters of the exhibit.

Fortunately, uShaka Marine World in Durban agreed to provide her with a permanent home in a more temperate water exhibit, and on 14 July, 2010 Wasabi was flown first-class from Cape Town to her new home in Durban.

Green sea turtles are listed as endangered and are protected from exploitation in most countries.

Read Wasabi's story on the Two Oceans Aquarium Blog.

I'm currently hitchhiking my way around the world and geocaching as I go. I started in Ireland and then made my way over to the United Kingdom. From there I headed for the Netherlands followed by Belgium and France. After that I made my way straight to Portugal so I could attend the Mega event in Aviero. This was one of the many trackables I encountered at the event.
