To have geocachers visit the real C&O 614. Currently it is on display at the C&O Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, VA but if its owner raises the big funds needed for a major restoration, it may hit the rails again and be visited at other places. This travel bug would also like to visit other Train Stations.
The C&O 614 is a magnificient Greenbrier - a steam locomotive with a 4-8-4 wheel configuration built for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1948. Its partner car, called a tender, carried its fuel - coal - and water supply. The coal was burned in its firebox to heat water to create steam to make it run. The locomotive and tender combined weighs 865.500 pounds and could reach a maximum speed of 125 mph.
The name Greenbrier came from the famous Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, WV, a major resort on the C&O main line. When originally in service it pulled the C&O’s premier express passenger trains, The George Washington and The Fast Flying Virginian between Richmond and Chicago over the eastern continental divide formed by the Allegheny Mountains.
Currently C&O 614 is on display at the C&O Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, VA, a fascinating place to learn about railroading. Still, if its owner raises the big funds needed for a major restoration, it may hit the rails again. NOTHING is as exciting as seeing a steam locomotive, hearing the rumble of its engine and horn, and feeling the ground vibrate as it passes by.
