Bison Facts!
The American Bison, also commonly known as the American Buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds. Their grazing ranges once covered an area stretching from parts of Canada, south into Mexico and east along the western boundary of the Appalachian Mountains.
Bison are herbivores, grazing on the grasses of the North American prairies. Their daily schedule involves two-hour periods of grazing, resting and cud chewing, and then moving to a new location to graze again.
Bison have long, shaggy, dark brown winter coats, and lighter weight, lighter brown summer coats. An adult bison can weigh from 700 to 2,200 lbs.
Both male and female Bison have short black horns that can grow up to 2 feet, which they use in fighting for status within the herd and for defense against predators.
Occasionally a rare genetic condition may result in the birth of a white buffalo. These white bison are considered sacred by many Native Americans.
