Visit every National Historic Site
Emblem of the stockade gate at Andersonville National Historic Site. The site includes the National Prisoner of War Museum, the Andersonville Prison, and the Andersonville National Cemetery. This Civil War site began holding Union prisoners in February of 1864. During its 14 months in operation, the prison saw around 45,000 prisoners and held some 33,000 prisoners at one time though it was meant for only 10,000. Of those, almost 13,000 died and are buried in the nearby cemetery which is still active. The site now includes the National Prisoner of War Museum which pays tribute to the men and women of the US Armed Forces who have been Prisoners of War throughout American history. Andersonville National Historic Site is open 7 days a week from 9am-5pm.
