About This Item

Confederate Sean

The American Civil War (1861-1865) is perhaps one of the most horrible, yet important events in North-American history. It pitted brother against brother in a new country that needed unification to succeed. Many things lead up to the southern states decision to secede from The Union but it seems all that is remembered today is slavery. While this was certainly a catalyst, and an important issue to resolve among the states, the war had little to do with it at all.

No matter how you choose to look at it, the Civil War gave birth to heroes, the type of individuals we only see in movies or read about in adventure novels. Men such as General Ulysses S. Grant, or General Robert E. Lee, and of course, the Great Emancipator himself, President Abraham Lincoln, who abolished slavery, upholding Thomas Jefferson's decree that "All men are created equal".

Confederate Soldiers were typically men in their early 20's who volunteered to fight what they viewed as a war against oppression from the Union Government. They were poorly fed and armed, unshaven, unkempt, and a ragged bunch most of the time. Still they fought on in hopes of freeing themselves from the rule of government they felt was unjust. One important difference between the Union and Confederate soldiers is that the Confederate army was 100% volunteer having never implimented a draft.

I am Confederate Sean, a soldier who volunteered for service in the Confederate Army to fight for our freedom from Union Rule. I began this was with a clear understanding of what was right and fair to me, now I am not so certain. Please help me understand why our enemies fight so hard against us. Am I fighting for the right cause?
