About This Item

Ft. Sumter

Decades of growing strife between North and South erupted in civil war on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal Fort in Charleston Harbor... Fort Sumter surrendered 34 hours later... Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back...

To commemorate Ft. Sumter that is now a National Monument, the first coin was minted...

If you ever have the chance to take the boat ride out to the Fort and see this monument, do so... It is well worth the money and the time...

This battle ground is etched in time, and now etched in silver for circulation at geocaches around the United States so that what so many fought for will not be forgotten...

This is about as close to the Gettysburg battlefield as you can get. The Black Horse Tavern (located not too far from this spot) is mentioned in several historic accounts. There was a Civil War veteran buried about 50 feet away. Pretty cool spot.

I dropped it near some of the war memorials on the DC mall, so I'm hoping that is an appropriate place.

I'm heading down to West Virginia in July, but that is probably too long to hold the coin. I will find a suitable place in the meantime.
