Dragons in Western mythology are evil, covetous, greedy, bad-tempered and all-around nasty critters. In the Far East, on the other hand, they are beneficent when respected, wise, and good luck to have around. Which is not to say that they are never "dangerous"; they can be cruel if ill-regarded, and they don't take kindly to those of poor character.
