Rights of the Child Geocoin

Travel to as many countries as possible, making coin bearers contemplate a moment on the Rights of the Child and human rights in general.

Marking the 20 year anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, this geocoin serves as a travelling reminder of the Rights of the Child and their importance.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The four core principles of the Convention are non-discrimination; devotion to the best interests of the child; the right to life, survival and development; and respect for the views of the child. Every right spelled out in the Convention is inherent to the human dignity and harmonious development of every child. The Convention protects children's rights by setting standards in health care; education; and legal, civil and social services.

This geocoin was first dropped at a cache located at the site of the 1993 Jamboree of the Kalaallit Nunaanni Spejderit Kattuffiat / Grønlandske Spejderkorps, marking the 50 year anniversary of scouting in Greenland. The coin was dropped there as part of the Explorer Belt 2009 of the Swiss Guide and Scout Movement, an adult guide and scout expedition starting in various fjords around Sisimiut and finally ending at the ice cap near Kangerlussuaq. We do not believe that Greenland has a particular deficit regarding human rights, and our dropping of the coin here should not be taken as such an implication. Instead, please help make this geocoin travel around the world and spread awareness for the Rights of the Child.
