Current Goal

I am a "Grunneger and will be a Grunneger" and therefore I would love to go visit many cashes in the province of Groningen. I would like to have a picture of all my visit locations. If I ever come across de boundaries, I do not have a problem with.

About This Item

Groningen Stad en Ommeland Geocoin Antiek goud.

Groningen is the capital of the most northeastern province of the Netherlands. It is the 'pronkjewail' ('jewel') of the province which is also called Groningen.

The Ommelanden (dutch for "surrounding lands") are the parts of Groningen province that surround Groningen city. Usually mentioned as synonym for the province in the expression Stad en Ommeland ("city and surrounding lands").
The text on the back of the coin is a verse out of the hymn of Groningen. The text: 'Grünnen Stad en Ommelaand, pronkjewail in golden raand' is dialect and translated: 'Groningen City and Surrounding Area's, jewel in a golden border'.
The year 1584 refers to the year of which the independency of the City of Groningen came to an end. Groningen chose to join forces with the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War in 1594. The army of Maurits of Nassau, prince of Orange forced the city to change sides and the city and the surrounding lands were forced to join together.
