Current Goal

To travel to the International Space Station Geocache GC1BE91 and then return to Chase Elementary School in Waterbury, Connecticut. This will be an epic journey and learning experience for the children of Chase School. We understand the complexity and obstacles involved in an adventure like this but remain optimistic. Regardless of the outcome we are sure to learn much more about space travel, the International Space Station and Astronauts along the way.

This travel bug is being activated by the 5th grade class of the Chase Elementary School in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Waterbury Police Activity League (PAL) is a non profit organization that promotes partnerships between youth, law enforcement and the community through educational, recreational and athletic activities. Waterbury PAL has partnered with Astronaut Rick Mastracchio, the Waterbury Public Schools and geocaching.com to facilitate this project. For more about Waterbury PAL please visit our website at www.waterburypal.org.

Astronaut Rick Mastracchio attended Chase Elementary School and is going to the International Space Station in November 2013. Our hope is that he will be able to take this travel bug with him to the International Space Station and then get it back to Chase Elementary School in Waterbury, CT when he returns. The first travel bug to visit the International Space Station was TB27AH8. The children of the 5th grade class of Chase Elementary School will be adding additional information to this page about NASA, Rick Mastracchio and the International Space Station as they learn about it. There will also be many pictures and updates posted on the logs as they become available.

Astronaut Rick Mastracchio has added 11 hitchhiker tags marked Exp 38 to this travel bug so that other schools could also join in on this adventure. Ten additional Greater Waterbury Schools are now participating on this journey with Chase Elementary School and each will receive a hitchhiker when the travel bug makes it way back to Earth. Enjoy the ride!!

The Grand Canyon (USA). Looks inverted from space!

Hello to the students and teachers of the Chase Elementary School from the Space Station. Here are the answers to your questions:

What does it feel like to be in space?

When you first get to space you don’t always feel great. It takes time for your body to adapt. At first a lot of your blood goes to your head since there is no gravity to pull it down. This gives you a headache and a stuffy hose. Also, your stomach feels queasy, like you just rode on a rollercoaster 10 times. Eventually your body adjusts the blood in your head and your stomach gets used to being weightless. Then you feel great and it is like you are superman. You can fly and lift thousands of pounds.

What does the earth look like in space?

The earth is beautiful from up here. So many colors of blue in the ocean. It is like looking at a globe or a map pf the planet. I should have studied my geography a little more. It is sometimes hard to identify the countries but I am getting better.

Can you see the weather from space?

We can see clouds, hurricanes and even lightning storms. Lightning is my favorite thing to watch up here. I have seen huge storms cover almost all of Africa and the lightning strikes danced all over the place. It was incredible.

Of course we can see snow covered places and If you know where to look we can see icebergs. They are difficult to tell from clouds but they have a slightly blue tint to them.

I had really enjoyed following Colonel Chris Hadfield previously on his Tumblr account; thanks AstroRM, for giving us another way of tagging (vicariously) along with you in space! What a lucky 5th grade class, too! I got to attend Event T- 8:00:00 (GC4QHRH) last week, right across the street from the Seal Beach, CA facility where the Saturn 5 rockets for the Apollo missions were assembled (and also which my dad worked on), shout out to Sweetwind for organizing that.

Looks like your snow-capped mountain is Mt. Shasta (a dormant volcano), with the right of the image being north, and top is west. What's also clearly visible is all the patches of clear-cut forest around it, which I find a little sad.

All the best for your mission!

This entry was edited by senoritafish on Friday, 15 November 2013 at 19:11:16 UTC.
