This TB is a member of the family of medical travelbugs. The goal is to travel as far as possible, preferably a global journey. The TB may not appear in the same stash twice. Please do not keep the TB in your possession for more than three weeks. Thanks!
Mirena).
PS: Dit is een ongebruikt spiraaltje!
The IUD (Intra-Uterine Device) is an often used contraceptive method in The Netherlands. Basically this method was already known bij the old Egyptians: By placing pebbles in the uterus of camels pregnancy could be prevented.
Hippokrates was the first to describe the contraceptive mechanism of intra-uterine objects in humans. The problem of removing these objects was however insuperable. So they tried to block up the uterus with a small cap, attached to the uterus with a small rod with a thickening at the tip to prevent it from falling out. In 1929 they developed an ‘uterus blocker’ made of silk and an alloy of silver and copper. Most pregnancies were prevented by the intra-uterine activity of the device and not by the blocking effect. However, because of the the pain of the insertion and the occurrence of infections this method became obsolete.
In the 50-ties nonirritating plastic was used to produce a new class of intra-uterine devices. The initial shape was helical. For that reason the Dutch nickname of a IUD is still ‘spiral’. Insertion is made easy by means of a hollow tube (the Egyptians use a hollow reed).
Nowadays a variety of shapes is used, all nonhelical. Most IUD’s are T-shaped and some contain supplementory contraceptive substances as copper (Nova-T) or a small amount of hormone (Mirena).
PS: This IUD has never been used!
Dank u!
Please sent this TB back home (near the city of Emmen in the Netherlands) so I can pick it up somewhere. Thanks!
