National Park Harz, N51°48', E10°35' Highest mountains in Northern Germany with the Brocken reaching 1140m (about 3400 feet). Stretching over the states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. During the Cold War, the Harz was divided by the Iron Curtain. The Harz is an area full of karst features. Caching Here (230 in radius of 25 miles): The entire Harz mountain range occupies an area of about 2000 square km (about 500,000 acres) and as a result the cache density is still low. Don't come here for the numbers as the caches tend to be true outdoor caches requiring lots of hiking and climbing. As the area has several rocks, caves, and abandoned railway tunnels always bring a flash light when caching here.The tower on the lower left of the coin was once a listening post during the Cold War. For a brief time before its demolition it served as a Lost Place Cache that Cachers would travel hundreds of miles for: Stöberhai (5/5). The mountain cross is on top of the Ilsestein, one of many rock formations in the area. And of course, there's a cache there: Ilsestein (2/3).
