The Boeing B-17 Flyiing Fortress is a 4 engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930's for the United States Army Air Corps. Over 12,000 of these bombers were produced from 1936 - 1945 and were primarily deployed as daylight precision strategic bombings of WWII against German industrial and military targets. It has a maximum speed of 287 mph and could fly at 35,000 feet. Following the end of World War II the B-17 was quickly phased out and the majority were sold for scrap and melted down. From 1946 - 1959 107 B-17's were converted to use as drones for practice targets for surface to air and air to air missle tests. As of 2011, there remain around a dozen that are still airworthy with another 20+ that are in storage or museums.
