About This Item

Buffalo

I am a Cape Buffalo. My journey started in the Kruger National Park where a lot of my family stays. It is said that we are the only animals that look at you as if you owe us money, and this is an appropriate description if you should ever come across us on foot in the bush.

Other than one of the big five, it is known as "The Black Death" or "widowmaker", and is widely regarded as a very dangerous animal. Buffaloes are sometimes reported to kill more people in Africa than any other animal.

Highly gregarious animals, buffalo associate in herds of up to 1000 or more individuals. Despite being very aggressive and extremely dangerous animals (more hunters are killed by buffaloes than any other animal), buffaloes are very peaceful amongst themselves.

The dominant bull normally is the oldest bull in the herd. Both sexes have horns, but those of males are more robust and heavier. Males can attain a mass of about 800 kg and they have a life span of approximately 20 years.
