Current Goal

I’m a Pacific Lamprey travel bug. Help me migrate! My mission is to swim around the Portland, OR, and Vancouver, WA, Metropolitan area visiting your favorite places to enjoy water. I would like to have my photo taken at at least 25 favorite watering holes in the metro area such as Tryon Creek, Willamette Falls, and Vancouver Lake Park. We all know favorite watering holes include places to drink "water" as well, such as coffee shops, soda shops, and brew pubs. Let's see how quickly I can visit 25 places! After you have posted your photo here, please leave me in a nearby cache.

By toting me along from geocache to geocache or waypoint, you're helping spread the word about one of the world's oldest and most interesting fish. While the Pacific Lamprey is culturally important to Native American peoples, we also help keep water clean and provide rich food sources for native species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, tribes and tribal organizations, and others are working to restore my species. They also want to share their passion for trust species and habitats--they belong to all of us! So help me along on my mission. Happy geocaching!

Learn More About Pacific Lamprey:

Why This Bug Was Made:

This travel bug is truly unique; there are 12 others located in caches across the range of Pacific Lamprey, but each one is hand-carved by Service Visitor Information Specialist Matt How. The inspiration for this travel bug and the 'Forgotten Fish' geocaching project is a desire by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees to not only educate and inspire you and other members of the public to help conserve Pacific Lamprey, but to connect with nature, too. By toting along a species from geocache to geocache or waypoint that doesn't have the charisma star power of say, a Bald eagle or a Pacific salmon, you're helping spread the word about one of the world's oldest and (we think) most interesting fish. We also want to share our passion for our trust species and habitats--they belong to all of us! So take this travel bug, help it along its mission, help us keep tabs on it, and most of all, be safe and have fun. Happy geocaching!

Please Note:  As with National Wildlife Refuges, it is illegal to leave permanent caches at National Parks and Monuments and other public lands.  However, virtual caches are finding their niche on public lands and activities such as the lamprey travel bug are welcome to visit.  We encourage participants to log their visit, take a picture of the lamprey travel bug, and upload it to Geocaching.com's website.  The lamprey travel bug can then be left in a nearby cache. Always check with site staff locally about specific regulations.

Often my Papa and I would stop along the Willamette River and soak our tired feet from biking all day. After reading the cache page, I thought this geocache would be the perfect place to help this travel bug continue it's journey. You can learn more about the river and enjoy the views here too. Happy travels!!

One of the best parts of geocaching to me, is not just the great places they bring you to. It is also the great things we can learn of the world around us!

Thank you for putting together and sending out this travel bug. For me it was a great resource to get information, to help teach my daughter more about our world and the things in it!

When I read my emails after dinner tonight, I was honored to find my geocache was chosen to be the starting point for a really cool travel bug!

It did not take much to convince Papa-Penguin to bring me here to check it out. After reading the email again to Papa-Penguin, I asked him, "What is a Pacific Lamprey?" He simply replied, "Let's go find out!" After watching a beautiful sunset, we walked on to check my geocache and retrieve the Travel Bug.

Wow!!!!

I have seen these creatures before, but I had no idea what they were called or how important they are to people or the river habitat. We sat on the steps by the reservoir until it was to dark, reading information about them and looking at pictures with his phone. Thank you for helping teach me about such an interesting fish. I will be happy to help move this little guy along!

😁 Happy Caching!!! 😁

Hello geocaching community! So I'm officially hiding somewhere in Mt. Tabor Park in Portland, Oregon. What's a lamprey doing in Mt. Tabor Park? Well, there's water in the Park, right??? In order to find me, you're going to have to find a cache that'll have you looking at--and learning about-- water.

Pacific lamprey and humans have something in common (besides having both good and bad sides), we need cold, clean, connected water, and waterways! So let the hunt begin!

Oh, and when you find me, take a picture of me! Then choose to either 'discover' me, or 'grab' me. And hey, if you grab me, remember that Pacific lamprey don't like to be grabbed for that long! So move me along my mission, and do your best to take me places where water is important or where there might be good lamprey habitat, or where others might learn more about my species.
