City of Hildesheim, N52°9.5', E9°57' The city of Hildesheim is located in the the state of Lower Saxony. Since 815 it is the residence of the Roman Catholic Bishop. The St. Mary Cathedral was built from 1010 to 1020 and is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Visit the cathedral treasure (Domschatz) and the cathedral garden to see the rose bush supposedly 1000 years old. Ever heard of Didrik Pining? He was born in Hildesheim and together with his friend Hans Pothorst he set out to explore the world. In 1473 he was sponsored by the Danish and Portuguese to find a western way to Asia. It is believed that they made it to New Foundland (20 years before Columbus). However, Didrik never returned to Hildesheim, he became governor of Iceland in 1478. There are speculations that some of Didrik's crew later joined Columbus' expeditions... Caching Here (160 in radius of 10 miles): Lots of puzzle caches in the area, not too many easy traditionals.
