To have its picture taken in front of zoos all over the U.S. and the world, and to travel to Africa where Colossus was born. UPDATE: Now that the TB has seen Colossus's homeland of Africa, it would like to return to Cincinnati, continuing to visit zoos along its journey. It would love to travel home via the Eastern route through Asia and the Pacific if possible.
Colossus, one of the Cincinnati Zoo’s most beloved western lowland gorillas, died on April 11, 2006, at age 40 (a respectable old age for gorillas in captivity). This Travel Bug was launched at the Cincinnati Zoo in his memory. Colossus was born in 1966 in the wilds of Africa. Today, less than 75,000 western lowland gorillas survive in the wild. Due primarily to habitat destruction caused by logging and agricultural expansion, all gorillas are endangered or highly threatened. Also, at least 1,000 gorillas are illegally poached for the bushmeat trade each year.
