Dryaden (Grieks: Δρυάδες, Dryádes) zijn figuren uit de Griekse mythologie. Het waren boomnimfen die eruitzagen als mooie vrouwen. Dryaden (of hamadryaden) waren elementaire krachten maar niet onsterfelijk. Zodra de boom doodging waarmee ze in verbinding stonden, stierven zij ook. Dryaden straften sterflijken wanneer ze takken braken, of als ze schade aan haar boom aanrichtten.

Een van de bekendste verhalen is die van de dryade Driope. Er zijn een aantal legenden over haar geschreven. Een daarvan is dat ze bedrogen werd door Apollon. Ze kreeg een zoon van hem genaamd Amphissus. Vervolgens werd ze veranderd in een boom.

Een andere legende: Ze was op een dag met haar jonge zoon en haar zuster Iole mooie bloesems aan het plukken van een Lotus om daarvan een slingerkrans te maken. De boom was echter geen Lotus, maar Lotis, een dryade die verstopt was omdat iemand haar achtervolgde. En waar Driope de bloesems had geplukt stroomde nu bloed uit haar takken. Lotis was kwaad, schreeuwde van pijn en woede en veranderde Driope in een boom.

On the face of this coin we have a member of The Dryads in calm repose looking serenely down over the symbols of her duties in service to Artemis.

• The first is a waterdrop testyfing to guardianship of natural springs, pools, streams and water of the woodlands.
• The second, an wly opened blossom as symbol of perfect fertility waiting to conceive life anew.
• The third, heads of grain as the fruits of life coming to fruition.
• The centerpiece, the greek bow and huntresses arrows of Artemis as guardian of her domain.
• The fifth, the bee is a symbol of constantly nurturing to coax new life into being.
• Next, number six, the oak leaf is a symbol of of her position as warden of the forest.
• Lastly, seventh, the musical note, is a dual motif of creativity and lasting beauty. 

Each of these symbols lies in order over the master symbol of the crescent moon which is Artemis' personal symbo. 

The Dryad hersef is enabeled in the honeyed tones of natural wood and surrounded by a fully 3D rendered frame of ancient Greek design. The pattern is Corinthiam carving, recreated through historical sketches from the ancient Greek city of Corinth circa 450BC.

The reverse side of the coin portrays the strength of Artemis herself as huntress and leader of the Dryads. As the daughter of Zeus and Leto she stood high in the order of the Greek pantheon and was no shrinking violet.
