About This Item

Otti-Coin

Sydney/Australia – Seligenstadt/Germany

This Coin is dedicated to a woman with the unusual and fine-sounding name Ottilie Schmigalle. Ottilie's maiden name was Gründer and she was born on 30th September in 1905 in Breslau/Silesia/German Empire. At age 90 she died in Koblenz/Germany on 16th December in 1995. She is buried in Erfurt beside her sister Charlotte Klara Rösner, née Gründer. Her only daughter Ruth got to know her husband Kasimir after World War II in 1949. Aged 18 she emigrated with him across Innsbruck/Austria to Melbourne/Australia.

Since this time Ottilie's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren continue to live in Australia, while the descendants of her sister Charlotte are living in Germany. Since this time there have been family connection between Germany and Australia, but there are only a smattering of contacts now.

The coin's mission is to find its way back to Germany, to keep up memories of Ottilie Schmigalle and to build a family bridge from Sydney to Seligenstadt.) The coin starts its journey in Melbourne, where most of the descandants are living today. First it has to find its way to Sydney, where one great-grandchild of Ottilie just moved away. Then back to the lovely ancient town Seligenstadt near Frankfurt/Germany which will be it's final destination.

As soon as the coin comes home to Seligenstadt, we will start planning an Australian trip to visit the family line on the other side of the world. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long.

Sydney/Australien – Seligenstadt/Deutschland

What an amazing story, I'm interested in family history and have collected info on my own and also have many books on my own family. We were camping at the waterhole on the new year weekend and thought we should check out nearby caches...what a surprise there was one 32m away. So funny. I'll drop off this piece of history on our visit to family next weekend.
