About This Item

Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri River. In July of 1804, Lewis wrote, ". . .I saw a great number of feathers floating down the river . . . those feathers had a very extraordinary appearance as they appeared in such quantities as to cover pretty generally sixty or seventy yards of the breath of the river." Today white pelicans are still seen along the flyway of the Missouri River and can be seen sitting on sandbars along Nebraska's northern border where the Missouri is considered to be in the "wild" state. The nearby town of Tekamah, Nebraska, celebrates this history with pelican pictures and many statues dressed in various fun styles.
