In April of 2006 I set up a travel bug race with coworkers. Points were earned from specific tasks (picture of the bug at a baseball stadium, for example) and for racking up mileage. We had about ten entrants including some beanie babies, a gnome, a troll pencil topper and animal from the Muppets. They were all placed in a cache on Mt. Tom. The gnome won the race and over the years I would receive occasional updates from some of trackables. Most went quiet.
Last week, almost ten years later, I get an email that my entrant, Flex, has returned to Massachusetts after logging 26,000 miles, including a trip to Hawaii. I look to see where in MA and it's another cache on Mr. Tom! So today, Owen, Eli, Scooter and I hiked to the reservoir and, after tromping through the woods for a bit, retrieved Flex.
Soon, we'll send him back out to complete his mission of making it to Ireland. The circumference of the Earth is 25000 miles so this bendy little super hero has truly come full circle.
