About This Item

Smokey

Hi. I'm Smokey Bear. Contrary to popular belief, my middle name is NOT "the". I've been our national symbol of forest fire prevention for over 50 years now. For years I was just a cartoon before a black bear cub was found on the Capitan Gap Fire, Lincoln National Forest, NM in 1950. After nursing me back to health, I was taken to the national zoo in Washington, DC to become the real live symbol. I became so popular that the US Postal Service gave me my own zip code (20252) in 1964. That real live part of me died at the zoo in 1976 and was transported back home where he was buried in Capitan, NM. My popularity and recognition is almost unsurpassed. According to a survey conducted several years ago, I'm the second most recognized advertising icon, second only to Santa Claus.

I want to honor all the fallen wildland (forest) fire fighters. Scattered all over this great country of ours are museums, monuments and memorials dedicated to these fallen heroes who gave their lives fighting the fires that destroy so much. Below are just a few of these places of honor. Please take me to these and any others that may be out there, take my picture with the place of honor, and place me in a nearby cache so that someone else can carry me on my quest. Also, please e-mail my owner the correct coordinates of each place visited. He's trying to compile a database of all the memorials, monuments & museums and this would help greatly. Coordinates listed below may not be exact but should be close enough to get you where you can find it. If not, my apologies. A list of more memorials and monuments (the published list is growing almost daily) can be found at (visit link) .
