About This Item

A primeira parte é verde e simboliza a esperança. À volta do escudo existe a esfera armilar a amarelo.

Coat of arms of Portugal

The Portuguese flag is divided into two parts by a vertical line. The first part is green and symbolizes hope. The second part is red and symbolizes the blood and courage of the Portuguese killed in combat. In the center of vertical line is a shield with seven castles and five corners in blue. Around the shield there is a yellow armillary sphere. The five corners symbolize the five Moorish kings defeated by D. Afonso Henriques in the Battle of Ourique.
The 5 white dots inside each corner represent the five wounds of Christ.
The seven castles symbolize the fortified towns that D. Afonso Henriques conquered from the Moors.
The armillary sphere represents the world that the Portuguese navigators discovered in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and the people with whom they exchanged ideas and trade.
