About This Item

Christopher Columbus (born between 31 October 1450 and 30 October 1451, died May 20, 1506 ) was an Italian explorer, navigator and colonizer , born in the Republic of Genoa (Italy). With support from the Spanish royal couple (King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, " Reyes Catolicos ") he set out across the Atlantic to find a sea route other than Vasco da Gama did to India. Columbus reached America in 1492. , He thought that he had found a western route to India and the people of America came to be called Indians. The discovery marks the beginning of the European colonization of the Americas .

Christopher Columbus was not the first European to reach the Americas. The Vikings , with Leif Eriksson at the helm, had visited North America as early as the 1000's and the Portuguese João Vaz Corte Real could possibly have been there in 1472. Medieval legends also speak about the Irish monk Saint Brendan . He undertook long voyages on the 500 's and it has been speculated that he, too, reached North America.
