Ferdinand Magellan, really Fernão de Magalhães, born in 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal, died April 27, 1521 on the island of Mactan, Philippines, was a Portuguese sailors and explorers who sailed for both Portugal and Spain. He was the first to sail from Europe westwards to Asia, and he was the one who named the Strait of Magellan into the Pacific. He was also the first to sail around the world, though not in the same way; in an early trip he sailed from Europe east to Indonesia and in his last journey, he reached the same longitude from the other direction.

Ferdinand Magellan, egentligen Fernão de Magalhães, född 1480 i Sabrosa, Portugal, död 27 april 1521 på ön Mactan, Filippinerna, var en portugisisk sjöfarare och upptäcktsresande som seglade för både Portugal och Spanien. Han var den förste att segla från Europa västerut till Asien och han var den som namngav Magellans sund i Stilla Havet. Han var också den förste att segla jorden runt, om än inte i samma resa; i en tidig resa seglade han från Europa österut till Indonesien och i sin sista resa nådde han samma longitud från andra hållet.
