About This Item

Pronghorn Racer

Common Name: Pronghorn;  Scientific Name: Antilocapra americana;  Favorite Hobby: Racing cars

People have long remarked about the Pronghorn's great running ability.  Pioneers on horseback could not catch them and when people started driving cars, they would sometimes try to out-race one.

The most characteristic large mammal of the Great Plains is the Pronghorn. Entirely unique on this planet, the Pronghorn's scientific name, Antilocapra americana, means "American antelope goat." But the deer-like Pronghorn is neither antelope nor goat -- it is the sole surviving member of an ancient family dating back 20 million years.

The Pronghorn is the fastest animal in the western hemisphere, running in 20-foot bounds at up to 60 miles per hour leaving pursuing coyotes and bobcats in the dust. Unlike the Cheetah, speedburner of the African plains, the Pronghorn can run for hours at quite a fast pace. No other land mammal can keep up with the Pronghorn over a long distance. Pronghorns typically have twins. Even they are speedy - they can outrun a man when four days old!

Saw this TB in the LoDo TB & Geocoin Hotel (GC2KCRP) on September 28, 2014 in Denver, CO. I came here the day after the start of the 1st Annual Battle of the Bugs hosted by Memfis Mafia. In the interest of not appearing to be tainting the race, I only discovered a number of trackables and did not move any. If you are in the race, good luck!
