E.T. Phone Home.
E.T came to this earth exploring the people and culture around. When his spaceship was tragically broken he was stranded on earth, so, he figured that he would try to phone home. Well, he also wanted to learn more about this mystical planet and wants to explore all or earth and hopefully return to space. His dream is to fly into outer space and return to his family & friends.
The one and only E.T. Travel bug’s mission is to explore the earth and someday, return to outer space. If you look inside his space ship, you will see the photos he took of some of the events in his adventure. E.T would like to search all around this wonderful world and hopefully find a way to “Phone Home” and return to space.
The E.T.Phone Home Travel Bug started his mission here at the Oak Ridge Observatory in Harvard Massachusetts.
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) conducted with the 84-foot radio telescope This was META (Megachannel ExtraTerrestrial Assay), funded by The Planetary Society (through a gift from Steven Spielberg).
E.T. Meets SETI
In 1982, an event in Hollywood had an unexpected impact on the world of SETI. Steven Spielberg released the movie E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and it became one of the most popular films in history. Carl Sagan, had met Spielberg several times for informal dinners and long conversations. Sagan said we could mount a credible program for $100,000. Spielberg immediately agreed.
Thus was born Project META (Megachannel Extraterrestrial Assay).
In 1985, Spielberg personally threw the switch that turned on the new system. SETI took another major step forward.
The telescope was badly damaged in a windstorm during the week of March 22, 1999.
