Feeling thirsty ?

A brief respite in the 'Coliban Cache' should quench that parched throat.

This cache lies on the Coliban Water System, created by diverting the Coliban River into gravity-fed channels and aqueducts, including over 20 reservoirs and more than 500km of open channels.

The 64 mile long Coliban Main Channel features a fall of 2 feet every mile, but this one kilometre stretch includes a drop from the plateau to the plains via several interesting granite and bluestone structures.

  • Dissipator 1 The second fall, closest to the road.
  • Dissipator 2 This is a long drop, so the water's energy is disrupted by a dissipator half way down.
  • Dissipator 3 The dissipator churns the water, but does not divert its direction.
  • Dissipator 4 The dissipated water's momentum is greatly reduced, and it falls into a deep basin without the pounding of the first fall's drop. The dissipator can just be seen at the top of this picture.
  • Dissipator 5 The deep basin is sufficient to absorb any remining energy and allows the water to 'overflow' into another right-angle turn at normal speed again.
