Current Goal

I want to remind geocachers of the importance of bringing the 10 essentials whenever they are geocaching. If possible, I would love to be photographed while being used, before dropping me off in the next cache.

About This Item

Essential #2 - Compass

We recomend you keep a list of items that you may need while performing an outdoor activity, and bring those items in your pack. Hikers keep a 10 Essentials list:

2. Compass
3. Flashlight
4. Extra Food and Water
5. Extra Clothing, shelter if necessary
6. First-Aid Kit
7. Pocket Knife
8. Waterproof Matches
9. Candle and Firestarter
10. Whistle
11. (some people suggest Sunglasses, sunblock, and bug spray as an essential.)

Please, for any geocaching activity where you go into the woods for a significant ammount of time (more than one mile into woods?) bring your essentials in your pack.

First time geocaching with my son. Rented a unit from Canaan Valley State Park and had a great time. My son Josh traded for the compass before we knew what travel bugs were. Will borrow or buy our own unit soon so we can send him on his way.

We have our essential geocaching backpack that we take with us all the time....however, have to admit, we don't have a compass...only because we have the GPS....and extra batteries. We also carry the mini first aid kit, lots of water, flashlight, pocket knife......and of course all of our trinkets to trade for geocaching. I travel quite a bit and will be moving the Compass along pretty soon!
