To travel to Australia by as many hops as it takes and meet people of Cornish descent. Please attach any travelling companion to me on the way.
My Cornish flag tags are commemorating and symbolically recreating the Cornish Diaspora: the migration of Cornish people from Britain all around the world in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Cornish represent a dictinct cultural group in the United Kingdom who have traditionally worked in mines and fishing. When the tin mines in Cornwall closed, many families, known as Cousin Jacks, travelled the world to find work, settling in Canada, the USA, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and lots of other places, bringing with them their mining skills and culture. Amongst other traditions they introduced Cornish pasties and a passion for playing rugby to their new homelands.
This is one of 7 tags that I am hoping will reach places traditionally associated with ex-pat Cornish communities and fall into the hands of a descendant of a Cousin Jack.
