MODEL CITIZEN'S
2006 Texas Geocaching Association Geocoin
Don't keep this coin - it is not a trade item!
This is a copy of ModelCitizen's Texas Geocaching Association geocoin that was lost or stolen. The original coin was sent out to travel, but went missing. It has been missing for almost a year and a half, so I made this copy coin to travel in its place. Hopefully, the replacement coin will last longer and travel more than the original did.
This geocoin's mission is to visit some of the places in Texas where my family spent weekends and vacation time when I was a kid. Four places stand out in my memory: Big Bend National Park, Garner State Park, the Alamo, and Enchanted Rock State Park. I would love for this travel bug to visit these places and get some photos taken and posted here on its web page.
My family (Mom, Dad, older sister, me, younger sister, younger brother) were very close growing up and my parents often took us on weekend or vacation trips to local parks and attractions. We had a small pop-up camper that we would camp out in, packing all our food in an ice chest and cooking our meals on a small grill. We would explore the area and swim, hike, or play during the day, then play card and board games together in the camper until late at night.
I remember visiting Big Bend National Park and going on a long hike on one of the nature trails. While we were on the trail, a bad storm rolled in. Suddenly, hailstones started raining down on us. We all covered our heads and ran, eventually finding shelter in a restroom building along the trail - but not before my younger sister got hit in the head by a fairly large hailstone. She wasn't hurt too badly.
At Garner State Park we would swim and play in the river, swing off of a couple of rope swings that were along the bank, walk across the dam, and rent paddle boats. The rope swings in particular were a lot of fun and we would spend hours swinging into the water.
The Alamo made quite an impression on me as a young boy. We heard the story of the brave stand at the Alamo again and again in school and even sang songs about it. Davy Crockett was one of my heroes at the time and the resolve of the Texans and their stand against Santa Anna despite overwhelming odds impressed me very much.
Enchanted Rock was a very memorable spot. We hiked to the top of this large stone hill/mountain and enjoyed the view from the top. Somewhere around here I've got an old picture of me as a youngster standing on top of the mountain.
Please try to keep this geocoin moving. Place it in another cache within two weeks if you can and please try to help move it toward its goals.
Thanks!
Blue skies and happy caching!
