To travel from cache to cache telling his story
Peter the Penguin became a celebrity when in June 2000 a ship called the Treasure spilled a large amount of oil near Cape Town, South Africa which threatened the two penguin colonies on Robben Island* and Dassen Island. Peter was one of the twenty thousand birds taken from the islands before they could be affected by the spill and transported by road to Port Elizabeth (+- 700km) and released into the sea. The idea was that the spill would have been cleared up by the time they arrived back. Radio transmitters were attached to Peter and two companions and their journey was tracked by satellite.
