This item was picked up at the British Fusilier's Museum inside the Tower of London. Keep him moving, and maybe he will make it back to Normandy some day...
On June 6, 1944 (D-Day) 2700 ships carrying landing craft and 176,000 soldiers crossed the English Channel. At 6:30 am allied troops stormed ashore onto the heavily fortified Normandy beaches. These beach landings were the largest sea-borne invasion in history. The beaches were given code names - Omaha, Sword, Juno, Utah and Gold. Many of these beaches had been laid with hundreds of mines, fortified machine gun nests and miles of barbed wire. The invasion force was backed up by air-borne divisions who either parachuted or used gliders to land behind the enemy lines. They captured many enemy bridges and railway tracks.
This soldier is wearing a Mark III steel helmet, 1940 pattern blouse and trousers, hobnailed "ammunition boots" and a rubberised inflatable life vest. His 1942 "battle jerkin" was only issued to some of the initial assault waves for D-Day. His rifle is a .303in calibre Lee Enfield rifle which was more reliable and accurate than the Sten machine gun which has also used by British troops during D-Day.
