The sisters hope to brighten your day with their brilliant colors. They also hope to inspire you to take a little time and learn more about the wonderful Ixil people of Guatemala (There are many good books and there is always Google). The sisters would like to make it back to Guatemala to have their picture taken (but please don't leave them there) in their native land and then return to Washington.
Esperanza TB
These three tiny sisters represent the three towns which define the Ixil Triangle in the Central Highlands of Guatemala. The towns are Nebaj, Cotzal and Chajul. The TB sisters are named as one, ESPERANZA - Hope. They symbolize the hope of the Ixil people in villages being developed with the help of the Agros Foundation which is helping to break the cycle of poverty in Central America.
The Ixil people are descendants of the Mayans, they suffered greatly during the civil war which stretched from the '60's into the '90's. Many people lost their lives and land during the war. Much is being done by the Agros foundation and others to improve the living conditions of the Ixil and to help them break out of their poverty.
