Bertie is a hippo that lives at the Denver Zoo. He was born on 8/21/1956 and is the oldest resident of the zoo. He is much beloved. Bertie would like to visit hippos in other zoos.
Sadly, Bertie was humanely euthanized on May 4, 2015. He was 58 years old and the oldest living hippo in an accredited North American zoo at the time of his death. Thanks to his outstanding animal care team, he far outlived the average oldest age of most zoo hippos of up to 50 years. He will live on in the memories of so many people, some who loved him from childhood to adulthood.
