About This Item

Barny in Company

Please don’t open, contains
human Ashes of a WWII Veteran.

The photo of Barney was taken from a large photo of “Company 4-B... U.S. Naval Training Station, San Diego, Calif. 24 April 1941” At that time he was due to get out after being in the Navy for two years.

In 1939 Barney joined the Navy to see the world but before he was due to get out he got caught up in WWII. Barney ended up in the South Pacific on a ship carrying “Aviation Fuel and Detonators.” That does not seem to be my idea of a good combination, and what I understand no one else did either because his ship was not welcomed in convoys. Barney’s ship, the USS Roustabout, started out in the South Pacific, around Guam. However, later in the war Barney’s ship ended up in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, all the time hoping they don’t get spotted by Japanese submarines. So, bottom line Barney did not get to see much of the world. However, he was awarded two "Navy Bronze Stars".

For 15 years I had the privilege of knowing my father in-law that every one called Barney, however he died in 1994. When Barney died the family had him cremated and the ashes were given to my wife for safe keeping. Because we are world travelers we decided to take some of Barney were ever we went. We used to take two of those 35 mm film containers (each holds about 1 oz. of Barney) and when we found a nice place we would spread a little of Barney as a remembrance. But as time went on we started to run out of Barney so we cut the amount that we took to just one film can (1 oz.). Then I got the idea to send Barney all over the world with a Travel Bug.

I also attached my Pathtag to Barney please don’t remove it, however if you like it you can always make a trade request.

We received so many positive statements from people that saw this TB that we have started a Barney series. This is the 2nd in the Barney series, you can track them all at:

Sorry it took me so long to move Barney along. We brought him back home with us to Manchaca (Man-shack), TX which is a suburb of Austin. We left him in a Travel Bug hotel so hopefully he will be picked up soon and moved along. Thanks!!
