Current Goal

"Corvette Summer's" mission is to travel the open roads of the United States, especially Route 66. Take pictures of the uniquely American things that you see along the way and post them. Remember, the Corvette is "America's Sports Car." Drive carefully, and don't get a ticket.

About This Item

My parents owned a drive-in movie theater when I was in junior & senior high, and each summer we would spend our time working there. In 1978, I remember watching the movie “Corvette Summer” with Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker of Star Wars fame). In the summer of 1979, my mother almost bought one of the 25th Anniversary Indy Pace Car Corvettes. What a dream for a high school kid! Instead, she opted at the last minute to buy a Volkswagen Scirocco Limited Edition. It was black and silver too, but certainly not a Vette. That was about as close as I ever came to a Corvette. I have owned numerous Chevrolets (a Blazer, and now a Suburban with kids). During the summer of 2005, we went on the road for a month traveling the Northeastern and Central US. One of our stops was the Corvette Museum and Factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky. That desire to have a Corvette was reinvigorated during that visit. During the factory tour, my wife was picked out of the crowd and was actually taken on the floor where the newly assembled Corvettes roll off of the line and touch ground for the first time. She was allowed to “birth” one, being the first to turn the key on a shinny new black Vette. It was too cool, but as she warned; I am probably too tall to fit in one, and she quipped that she would be in trouble to quick, since she likes to drive fast. There are other things more important which are competing for my money at this time; kid’s college funds, retirement funds, and charitable works. So about all that I can do is put this $1.00 Hot Wheel CR6 on the road—it gets excellent gas mileage, and the insurance is next to nothing! However, if there is anyone out there that needs to put a Vette in a good home, I certainly am willing to make a deal with you! Any takers?
