To direct cachers to its lair, and provide a hint for another cache. Please keep this item within 25 miles of Groton, MA.
[Original Description]
It's got the tail of a beaver, but the body of a chipmunk. It lives in pine trees, but only if they are near water. What the heck is this thing? We don't know. Even IT doesn't know. But one thing it does know: how to find the cache "Lair of the Mutant". And as of January 2009, this guy is also carrying the only hint to "Every Mutant Has His Day". If you find this bug, note the cache coordinates and log a retrieval or discovery. If you do take the bug, please move it along as quick as you can, and keep it within 25 miles of Groton, MA. Both of these caches are micros, so as an alternative to trading there, you can trade SMALL ITEMS within the secret compartment of this bug as you move it along. Please do not overstuff the compartment, and be very gentle with the closing mechanism. And a big thanks for all the great photos!!
[IMPORTANT UPDATE]
Sadly the original Mutant has gone missing under very mysterious circumstances. I'm not saying it was aliens -- but it was aliens.
He was one of a kind and therefore cannot be directly replaced. However, a relative of his has been tracked down. This guy does not share the mutancy of the Mutant and he is really just your basic, normal, highly knowledgeable chipmunk. He knows everything the Mutant did and will be sharing it with New England cachers as of December 2011.

I've got a replacement for this guy. He is definitely not the same (how could he be?) but he vows to get the job done, and do his best to fill the Mutant's unfillable shoes. Paws. Whatever.
I will release him as soon as my back spasms stop.

Oh Noes !!!
The Ol' Mutant has gone missing?
What a shame . . . he sure had a storied history!
At least he's well preserved in numerous photos on the site . . .

Very dark news:
I was just contacted by an honest cacher who has lost The Mutant. I suppose there is some hope that he might turn up eventually, but not much. We do ask that you keep him in your prayers.
In the meantime I am going to research his family tree and see if I can rope any of his relatives into this game of ours.

High-tailed it over to Chelmsford when we saw the mutant land. Will move him along soon.

Wow, does this TB have a history and stories! And to think I just stumbled across it - I wasn't out looking for it! Shouldn't be a problem finding a new home for it. Should I even dare to be calling it an 'it'??

Finally, after watching this little rodent for a year, I got my hands on him! He immediately went into a disguise, but I managed to get his secrets before he went back into his bag.

I needed to find this guy to get what turns out to be two of the closest
remaining caches to my recent place of work, so when he appeared in MOO I
jumped at the chance and found him. Now that I know all his secrets, I wanted
to set him free again, and this was a nearby cache large enough, and seems to
get reasonable traffic. Watch out for the poison ivy!

I needed to find this for one of the mutant caches, so when I received an alert
that it'd been spotted in Moo, I headed out the next day and made the capture.
Just after we spotted a nesting osprey pair on the nearby swamp (non-mutant, as far as I can tell). I'll extract the secrets and find a new home for the critter.
