This is a patch duplicating the metal lid that covers an important surveying monument known as the Initial Point of the Sixth Principal Meridian. This monument can be found at the Kansas-Nebraska border, one mile west and one mile north of the city of Mahaska, Kansas. The date on the right side of the lid is when a memorial was erected by the Initial Point of the 6th Principal Meridian. The date on the right of the patch is when surveyors across multiple states celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the placing of the original monument which included a geocaching Cache In - Trash Out event.

KANSAS SOCIETY OF LAND SURVEYORS
Breaking the boundaries between surveying and
geocaching!
The Kansas Society of Land
Surveyors (KSLS) has a Geocaching Project. The KSLS Geocaching Project is an excellent opportunity
to promote the profession of land surveying as a viable career
choice. Geocachers use GPS to find and set things that are not
obvious to the eye. Land surveyors also use GPS (among lots of
other cool and expensive toys) to find and set things that are not
obvious to the eye. Geocachers try to get the best GPS accuracy
possible; surveyors use GPS equipment with accuracy that boggles
the mind. Geocachers may look for bench marks, whereas surveyors
often set bench marks. The two activities have many
similarities.
Look up a surveying company in your area in the phone book under the heading of "surveyors". Call them up; tell them about this travel bug; and ask them why they do what they do. You can even submit a log here about what their response was.
